Explore the realities of child sexual abuse, the role of Child Advocacy Centers in the process, and steps in any legal proceedings that result. Attendees will (1) learn to recognize signs and symptoms of child sexual abuse, (2) discuss what child advocacy centers do to support families impacted by child sexual abuse, and (3) understand the legal process when an allegation of child sexual abuse is made.

April 9 Online Safety 101 & Cyberbullying – 6-7 pm
Presentation by Change the Conversation, The Child Advocacy Center of Frederick County and the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office
Learn about risks associated with children and adolescent technology use and discuss ways to protect them from unsafe and potentially abusive online situations that involve adults and peers. Attendees will (1) discuss current trends in technology use among youth, (2) consider ways to increase safety for youth online, and (3) discuss the topic of online safety with youth in age-appropriate ways.

Mental Health First Aid for Adults Assisting Youth is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge or crisis. YMHFA is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people both in crisis and non-crisis situations.

April 12 Responding to Child Sexual Abuse: Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities – 1-2 pm

Enhance your response to child sexual abuse by learning about unique considerations for children with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Attendees will (1) review symptoms, factors, and reactions of child sexual abuse, (2) understand common characteristics and common co-occurring challenges among those with disabilities, (3) examine the intersection of child sexual abuse and those with disabilities, and (4) learn best practices to incorporate into your work with those with disabilities who have been impacted by child sexual abuse.

Learn practical strategies to promote body safety in the home and other settings. Attendees will (1) gain access to information that can inform decision-making, (2) be introduced to some online and app-specific tools that can assist with online safety, and (3) learn skills as adults in youth’s lives that can help with enhancing safety both online and in real life.

April 30 What We’ve Learned: A Case Study – 6-7 pm
Presentation by Change the Conversation, The Child Advocacy Center of Frederick County and the Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office
Discuss recent cases in Frederick County and what professionals have learned about child sexual abuse cases. Attendees will (1) learn about recent cases that were prosecuted in Frederick County, (2) discuss what professionals have learned, and (3) consider areas where professionals have improved in their response to child sexual abuse.
