Maryland Social Workers and Psychologists*
Maryland Professional Counselors

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss how key positive childhood experiences prevent and mitigate the effects of ACEs.
  • Explain the 4 building blocks of HOPE.
  • Explain the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 thinking.
  • Develop an understanding of how to incorporate HOPE into work with children and families.

Just as Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) can play a role in future health and well-being outcomes, so too can the presence or absence of Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs). The Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences (HOPE) framework is a new way of seeing and talking about experiences that support children’s growth and development. HOPE identifies ways that our communities and systems of care can ensure that all children have more positive experiences and support to nurture and celebrate their strengths. This training reviews the Four Building Blocks of HOPE and provides action items to integrate this strengths-based framework into your everyday work and lives.
